The best crawl space dehumidifiers

Nobody empties a bucket under a house. In a crawl space the condensate pump is not a convenience feature, it is the feature.

A crawl space dehumidifier

A dehumidifier belongs at the end of a crawl space project, not the start. If bulk water is still arriving and the ground is still bare, a dehumidifier is an expensive way to run an appliance continuously against an unlimited moisture source.

Once the water is handled and the ground is sealed, a properly chosen unit holds the space at 50 to 55% relative humidity and keeps it there. That is the point at which mold stops being a risk and the smell goes away.

What makes a crawl space unit different

RequirementWhy it matters down there
Low-temperature operationCrawl spaces run cold in the seasons when humidity is worst
Condensate pump with real liftThere is no floor drain and nobody will empty a bucket
Physical size vs hatchA unit that will not fit through the access is useless
Continuous-duty constructionIt runs for months at a time, not for an afternoon
FiltrationCrawl space air is dusty and the coil fouls quickly
Crawl space requirements versus a room dehumidifier

TypeBasement and crawl-space dehumidifier with a built-in condensate pump
Capacity90 pints/day at AHAM (80 F, 60% RH); 198 pints/day at saturation
DOE rating47.71 pints/day at DOE (60 F, 60% RH)
CoverageUp to about 2,600 sq ft
Airflow210 CFM
NoiseUnder 58 dB(A)
Pump liftPumps condensate over 16 ft of hose
Operating range33.8 to 104 F
FilterMERV-8

Two specifications matter more than capacity in a crawl space. The first is the minimum operating temperature: these spaces run cold in spring and fall, which is exactly when humidity is worst, and a unit that ices up at 55 F is useless in the season you bought it for.

The second is pump lift. There is no floor drain down there and nobody is crawling in to empty a reservoir. Sixteen feet of lift reaches a laundry sink, a standpipe or outside.

  • Pumps condensate over 16 ft of hose, so it can reach a drain that is nowhere near it
  • Rated from about 34 F, where consumer units frost up and stop
  • Publishes both AHAM and DOE capacity, which makes honest comparison possible
  • MERV-8 filtration and around 2,600 sq ft of coverage
  • Expensive
  • Large — measure the crawl hatch
  • Audible if the crawl space sits under a quiet room

TypePortable dehumidifier with an internal condensate pump
Why the pump mattersIt lifts the condensate to a laundry sink or a window, so you are not emptying a bucket

If the space is small, reasonably warm and the problem is mild, there is no need to buy a commercial unit. Just make sure it has a real internal pump rather than a gravity drain port, because gravity needs somewhere downhill to go and crawl spaces rarely provide it.

  • Much cheaper
  • Internal pump means unattended operation
  • Fits through a tight hatch
  • Frosts up and derates in cold conditions
  • Shorter service life in a damp space
  • Lower pump lift

Installing it properly

  • Set it on a block or stand, clear of the barrier and any water, with clearance around the intake and outlet.
  • Route the condensate line to a real destination — a laundry sink, a standpipe, a sump pit or outside — and support it so it does not sag and trap water.
  • Put a hygrometer at the far end of the space, not next to the unit. The reading beside the dehumidifier always looks good.
  • Plan for filter cleaning. A crawl space fouls a filter fast, and a blocked filter quietly halves the unit's output.

Questions people ask

Does a crawl space need a dehumidifier?

A sealed, encapsulated crawl space almost always does, because there is no ventilation to carry moisture away. A vented crawl space is a harder case: the unit ends up fighting outdoor air.

What size dehumidifier for a crawl space?

Match coverage area to the space and compare DOE ratings rather than AHAM ones, since DOE testing is done at a temperature much closer to real crawl space conditions.

Where does the water go?

Through the condensate pump to a laundry sink, a standpipe, a sump pit or outside. Check the unit's pump lift against the vertical height you actually need.

Will a dehumidifier stop crawl space mold?

Holding humidity in the low fifties removes the conditions mold needs. Existing growth still has to be cleaned up, and any liquid water source has to be fixed.

Plastic sheeting laid across crawl space ground

The best crawl space vapor barriers

Bare soil evaporates into your house all year. Covering it properly is the cheapest large improvement available under a floor.

A dehumidifier running in a basement

The best basement dehumidifiers with a pump

A dehumidifier manages the moisture already in the air. It does nothing about where that moisture is coming from — which is a feature, not a criticism, as long as you know it.

A small sump pit dug into the ground

The best crawl space sump pumps

The constraints down here are clearance and access, not horsepower. The best pump is the one that fits the pit you can actually dig.

A wet patch on a concrete basement floor

Is water in the basement bad?

Occasional dampness and standing water are different problems with different timelines. Here is how to tell which one you have.
