The best basement crack repair kits

A single wet line down a wall is a crack, and a crack has three different fixes depending on whether it is wet, moving, or holding the house up.

TypeInjection kit for poured-concrete wall cracks
What is in the boxInjection ports, surface paste and the resin cartridge
Best forA single non-structural crack that leaks under rain

For the common case — a vertical or diagonal crack in a poured wall that weeps after heavy rain — polyurethane is the right chemistry. It reacts with moisture rather than being defeated by it, and it expands to fill irregular voids through the thickness of the wall.

The flexibility matters over years. Foundations move seasonally, and a rigid repair in a moving crack simply cracks again beside the old one.

  • Cures in the presence of water, so you do not have to dry the crack first
  • Stays flexible, so seasonal movement does not re-open the repair
  • Fills the full depth of the wall rather than bridging the surface
  • Does not restore structural strength — it seals, it does not bond
  • Injection takes patience and a steady approach
  • Surface ports and paste have to be removed afterwards

TypeConcrete crack repair, cartridge-applied
Best forHairline and narrow cracks that are not actively running

Epoxy is the right answer when the crack is a structural defect rather than a leak: a stable crack in a poured wall where you want the wall to behave as one piece again.

If you are unsure whether the crack is still moving, tape a strip of paper across it, or mark and date the ends, and look again after a season.

  • Restores structural continuity across the crack rather than just sealing it
  • Very high bond strength to sound concrete
  • Well-documented product from a manufacturer with real technical data
  • Needs a dry, stable crack — moisture compromises the bond
  • Rigid, so continuing movement cracks the concrete beside the repair
  • Less forgiving of a careless application

TypeQuick-setting hydraulic cement
Set time3 to 5 minutes
Works under waterPatches holes where water is actively flowing through them
CompositionSand and cement, 100% solids
Coverage16 cu in per lb

Every basement should have a tub of this on a shelf. When water is actively running in through a hole, nothing else in this category can be used at all, and this can.

Treat it as the emergency measure it is. Stop the water today, then decide whether the crack needs injecting properly.

  • Sets while wet and expands as it cures, which is exactly what an active leak needs
  • Cheap, and keeps on a shelf for years
  • Right product for tie-rod holes, pipe penetrations and the wall-floor joint
  • Rigid, so it is not a permanent answer for a moving crack
  • Working time is measured in minutes — mix small batches

How injection works

  1. Clean the crackWire brush the surface along the full length and remove dust, loose concrete and any coating. The paste has to bond to sound concrete.
  2. Fit the injection portsSpaced along the crack at roughly the thickness of the wall. They are the route for resin to reach the full depth.
  3. Seal the surface between portsA surface paste keeps resin inside the wall instead of running down it. Let it cure fully before injecting.
  4. Inject from the bottom upStart at the lowest port and work upward. When resin appears at the port above, cap the one below and move up.
  5. Let it cure, then remove the portsFollow the stated cure time. The surface paste and ports chip off afterwards, leaving the repair inside the wall.

Questions people ask

Epoxy or polyurethane for a foundation crack?

Polyurethane for a wet crack or one that may still move; epoxy for a dry, stable crack where structural strength matters. Most residential leaking cracks are a polyurethane job.

Can I repair a foundation crack from the inside?

Injection repairs fill the full thickness of the wall from inside, which is why they work. Surface patching from inside does not, because water pressure gets behind it.

How much does a crack repair kit cost compared with a contractor?

A DIY injection kit is a small fraction of a professional repair. The trade is that a contractor carries a warranty and brings judgment about whether the crack is structural.

Will a repaired crack open again?

A polyurethane repair flexes with normal seasonal movement and generally holds. A rigid repair in a moving wall will crack again, usually alongside the original.

How to seal basement wall cracks

Surface patching a crack is a decorative exercise. Water pressure gets behind it within a season. Injection is the repair.

A painted masonry basement wall

The best basement waterproofing paint

These products work on exactly one problem. Used on the right wall they are excellent; used on the wrong one they peel off within a year.

Sealant being applied to masonry

Sealers are judged almost entirely on preparation. The same product is excellent on a clean bare wall and useless on a painted one.
