The best sump pump discharge kits

The pump is only half the system. Where the water goes, and how easily it gets there, decides what the pump can actually deliver.

Flexible discharge hose and a coupling

Discharge plumbing gets almost no attention and decides a surprising amount. A pump's flow figure is measured against a specific head, and every elbow, every reduction and every yard of corrugated hose adds to that head. Fit a good pump to a bad discharge and you have bought a worse pump.

The four rules

  1. Do not reduce the pipe size. If the pump has a 1-1/2 inch outlet, the discharge stays 1-1/2 inch. Garden hose adapters are for emergencies.
  2. Minimize elbows. Each one adds equivalent head. Two gentle 45s beat a hard 90 where you have the room.
  3. Discharge at least ten feet from the foundation, onto ground that falls away. A discharge next to the wall feeds straight back into the drain tile and the pump pumps the same water twice.
  4. Never tie into a sanitary sewer. It is prohibited almost everywhere, it overloads treatment plants during storms, and it can back up into your house.

TypeFlexible discharge hose with adapters and clamps
Typical size1-1/4" or 1-1/2" to match the pump outlet
UseTemporary or above-ground runs, and seasonal re-routing

The useful role for a hose kit is the last stretch: from the rim joist or the wall penetration out to wherever the water should land. That part needs to be movable, because the right discharge point in July is often the wrong one in January.

Match the hose to the pump's outlet size rather than stepping down to garden hose. Reducing the discharge is the quickest way to waste the capacity you paid for.

  • Everything needed to get water away from the house in one purchase
  • Easy to re-route seasonally, which matters where the line freezes
  • No solvent welding, so changes take minutes
  • Corrugated hose has more flow resistance than smooth rigid pipe
  • UV and foot traffic shorten its life outdoors
  • Not a substitute for a properly buried line

TypePolypropylene pipe transition with relief slots
Sizes1.5" line into a 3" or 4" discharge
What it doesGives water an escape route when the buried line is frozen or blocked

A frozen discharge line is one of the few failures that destroys a pump outright: the pump runs against a solid plug of ice, water has nowhere to go, and the motor cooks or the pit overflows. A relief fitting breaks that chain by giving the water an escape at a known point.

Yes, the escaped water lands near the house. That is a far better outcome than the alternative, and it is temporary.

  • Relief slots let the pump discharge even when the downstream line is blocked
  • Converts a dead pump and a flooded basement into water in the yard
  • Inexpensive for the failure it prevents
  • Water escapes near the house when it operates, which is not where you want it
  • Needs to be fitted outside the foundation at the right point in the run

Questions people ask

What size should a sump pump discharge pipe be?

The same size as the pump outlet, which is usually 1-1/2 inch on residential pumps. Going larger on a long horizontal run is acceptable; going smaller costs real flow.

Can I use corrugated hose for the whole discharge?

You can, but it has significantly more flow resistance than smooth pipe and degrades outdoors. Use rigid pipe for the vertical run and save the hose for the movable section.

How far from the house should the discharge be?

At least ten feet, onto ground sloping away. Closer than that and the water re-enters the drain tile and returns to the pit.

Can I connect my sump discharge to the sewer?

Almost universally prohibited, and for good reason: it overloads treatment capacity during storms and can back up into your home. Check local code, but assume no.

Discharge pipework leaving a sump pit

Sump pump discharge pipe size

The pump is rated against a certain resistance. Every reduction, elbow and yard of corrugated hose adds to it — and the pipe is often the real bottleneck.

Ice formed around an outdoor pipe

Sump pump freeze protection that actually works

A pump running against a plug of ice has nowhere to send water and no way to cool itself. This is the failure that takes out the pump and the basement together.

Ice around an outdoor pipe

Sump pump freezing in winter

The pump is fine. The pipe is full of ice, and the pump is now running against a closed valve it cannot open.

A check valve fitted to a sump pump discharge pipe

The best sump pump check valves

A forty-dollar valve is the single most common reason a healthy pump appears to be failing. It is also the easiest thing in the pit to replace.

How to install a sump pump

A like-for-like replacement in an existing pit is a two-hour job. Cutting a new pit into a slab is not, and this page is honest about which is which.
