Sump pump freezing in winter

The pump is fine. The pipe is full of ice, and the pump is now running against a closed valve it cannot open.

A discharge pipe outside a house in winter

Here is the mechanism, because it explains every fix on this page. At the end of each cycle, water remains in the discharge line unless the line drains completely. In freezing weather that water freezes at the coldest point — usually where the line leaves the house, or at the open end. The next cycle adds a little more ice. Eventually the pipe is solid.

At that point the pump runs against a sealed pipe. It moves no water, so nothing carries its heat away, and the pit keeps filling. You lose the pump, the basement, or both.

Prevention, in order of effectiveness

  1. Make sure the line drains fully. Continuous fall, no sags, no low points. This single property prevents most freezing.
  2. Keep the outlet clear. Snow banks, leaves and ice dams at the open end are where the plug starts. Walk out after each storm.
  3. Fit a freeze relief fitting if any part of the run is buried or unreachable.
  4. Shorten the exposed run in winter. A shorter above-ground route has less surface area to lose heat.
  5. Discharge downhill so gravity empties the pipe rather than leaving it standing full.

TypePolypropylene pipe transition with relief slots
Sizes1.5" line into a 3" or 4" discharge
What it doesGives water an escape route when the buried line is frozen or blocked

If part of your discharge is buried, this is the standard answer and it is inexpensive.

  • No power, no sensor, nothing to fail
  • Protects the pump as well as the basement
  • Cheap
  • Releases water near the house when it operates
  • Must be fitted at the right point

If it is already frozen

  1. Unplug the pumpStop it running against the blockage. That is what destroys the motor.
  2. Set up a temporary dischargeDisconnect above the check valve and run a hose to somewhere downhill and away from the house. The pit still needs emptying while you work.
  3. Clear what you can reachWarm water over the exposed sections. Not boiling, which can damage PVC, and never an open flame near plastic pipe.
  4. Check the outlet endThe blockage is most often in the last few feet, where the pipe is coldest and most exposed.
  5. Leave the temporary route in placeUntil the cold snap passes. Re-freezing in the same spot is near certain while the weather holds.

The winter checklist

  • Walk the discharge outlet after every significant snowfall.
  • Confirm the line still has continuous fall after frost heave has moved the ground.
  • Check the pit and the float, since basements get less casual attention in winter.
  • Test the pump monthly rather than quarterly through the coldest months.

Questions people ask

Will my sump pump discharge line freeze?

It can anywhere with sustained freezing, especially if the line holds water between cycles or the outlet is buried in snow. Continuous fall and a clear outlet prevent most cases.

What happens if the discharge freezes?

The pump runs against a sealed pipe, moves no water, and loses the flow that cools it. The pit fills, and you risk losing both the pump and the basement.

Can I use heat tape on a sump discharge?

Only a product rated for the pipe and the installation, fitted per the manufacturer's instructions. Improvised heating cable on plastic pipe is a real fire risk.

Should I disconnect the discharge in winter?

You can substitute a surface route that drains fully, which many people in cold climates do. What you must never do is leave the pump with nowhere to discharge.

Ice formed around an outdoor pipe

Sump pump freeze protection that actually works

A pump running against a plug of ice has nowhere to send water and no way to cool itself. This is the failure that takes out the pump and the basement together.

Discharge pipework leaving a sump pit

Sump pump discharge pipe size

The pump is rated against a certain resistance. Every reduction, elbow and yard of corrugated hose adds to it — and the pipe is often the real bottleneck.

The best sump pump discharge kits

The pump is only half the system. Where the water goes, and how easily it gets there, decides what the pump can actually deliver.
