Sump pump replacement cost

We are not going to invent a national average for you. Here is what the price is actually made of, so you can read a quote properly.

A pump being installed in a basement pit

What we can do is tell you exactly what the cost is made of, so that when you do get a quote you can see whether it is reasonable and what is driving it.

The four variables

VariableLow endHigh end
The pump itselfBudget thermoplasticPremium cast iron with a dual switch
Who fits itDIY, existing pit, like-for-likePlumber, out of hours, during a flood
What else is replacedPump onlyPump, check valve, switch, discharge modifications
ScopeSwap in an existing pitNew pit cut into the slab with a new discharge run
What decides the total

The gap between the cheapest and most expensive version of this job is very large — easily an order of magnitude — and almost all of it is scope rather than hardware.

What a reasonable quote includes

  • The pump, named by model, so you can look up its specification rather than accepting a horsepower figure.
  • A new check valve. A quote that reuses the old one is cutting a corner that produces a callback.
  • Pit cleaning, which should be part of the job and often is not mentioned.
  • Testing, with the installer present for a full start-and-stop cycle.
  • Disposal of the old pump.

Where you can genuinely save

  1. Do it before it fails. Emergency work during a storm is the most expensive version of this job, and the pump selection is whatever is in the van.
  2. Supply your own pump, if the installer allows it. You get to choose the model and check the specification yourself.
  3. Do the like-for-like swap yourself if the pit is accessible and the electrical work is unchanged. See how to install a sump pump.
  4. Replace the valve and switch yourself between pump replacements. Those are the parts that fail most and they are the easiest jobs.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to replace a sump pump?

It depends on the pump, who fits it, what else is replaced and whether a pit already exists. We do not publish figures because they vary too much to be useful; get two local quotes and compare the scope line by line.

Is it cheaper to replace a sump pump myself?

Substantially, if the pit is accessible and the swap is like-for-like. The hardware is the same; you are saving the labor, which is usually the larger half.

Does homeowners insurance cover sump pump replacement?

Generally not for wear and tear. Some policies offer a water-backup endorsement that covers damage from a failure, but not the pump itself. Check your own policy wording.

Should I replace the check valve too?

Yes, always. It is as old as the pump that failed, it costs very little, and a tired valve makes a brand-new pump behave as if it is faulty.

How to install a sump pump

A like-for-like replacement in an existing pit is a two-hour job. Cutting a new pit into a slab is not, and this page is honest about which is which.

A worn sump pump body

How long do sump pumps last?

Seven to ten years is the honest range. What decides where you land in it is duty cycle, pit size and the switch — not the badge.

The range runs from two downspout extensions to a full excavation. Understanding which end you are at is worth more than any national average.

A forty-dollar valve is the single most common reason a healthy pump appears to be failing. It is also the easiest thing in the pit to replace.
