Zoeller sump pumps

The brand most plumbers name first, for an unglamorous reason: cast iron, a float switch that has barely changed in decades, and published performance data.

Close view of a cast-iron pump body

Zoeller has been making pumps in Louisville since the 1930s, and the residential range has the feel of a product line that stopped changing once it was right. The M53 and the Flow-Mate series are cast iron, use a simple float switch, and come with published performance curves — which sounds like a low bar until you try to find the same information for a house-brand pump.

What Zoeller is good at

  • Cast iron as standard, not as a premium upgrade, across the main residential line.
  • A float switch with a long service record, which matters more than any other single specification.
  • Published flow at multiple lifts, so you can size the pump instead of guessing.
  • Parts and familiarity everywhere. Any plumber in the country has fitted one.

Where it is not the answer

  • Very narrow pits. The tethered float needs swing room; Liberty's vertical magnetic float fits tighter basins.
  • Maximum flow per dollar. Wayne generally gives more gallons for the money.
  • Weight-sensitive installs. A cast-iron pump in a crawl space with eighteen inches of clearance is a miserable job.

If you are replacing a failed pump and want to stop researching, this is the one. It is the most commonly installed residential sump pump in the country and the reasons hold up: iron, a proven switch, and a manufacturer that publishes a flow curve.

  • Cast-iron housing
  • Vortex impeller tolerates grit
  • Flow published at several lifts
  • Heavy
  • Tethered float needs pit width

Zoeller's numbering is confusing from outside, but the practical distinction is simple: 1073 is the 1/3 HP, 1075 is the 1/2 HP, and they are otherwise the same pump.

  • Cast iron
  • Well-documented performance
  • Comfortable for 8 to 10 ft of lift
  • Marginal above 12 ft
  • Needs float swing room

Step up to this when the lift is high or the pit refills within a minute or two during sustained rain. Not because bigger feels safer.

  • Meaningfully more flow at the same lift
  • Identical installation to the 1073
  • Cast iron
  • Short-cycles in a small pit
  • Higher current draw

TypeSubmersible, dual switch
Horsepower3/4 HP
LineZoeller at Home consumer range

The second switch is the real feature. A stuck float is the most common way a pump fails silently, and this is the cheapest way to make that failure survivable without installing a second pump.

  • Two switches remove the usual single point of failure
  • Serious flow
  • Cast iron
  • Expensive
  • Needs a large pit for two floats to work independently

Specifications from Zoeller at Home sump pump range.

Questions people ask

Is Zoeller the best sump pump brand?

It is the safest default and the most widely supported. Liberty is arguably better on switch design and Wayne on flow per dollar, so the honest answer is that Zoeller is the best brand to buy when you do not want to think hard about it.

What is the difference between the Zoeller M53 and the 1073?

Both are 1/3 HP cast-iron submersibles from closely related lines. In practice they fill the same role, and availability or price usually decides it.

Are Zoeller pumps made in the USA?

Zoeller's residential pumps are manufactured in the United States and the company has been based in Louisville, Kentucky since the 1930s.

How long does a Zoeller sump pump last?

In a correctly sized pit, the upper end of the usual seven-to-ten-year range and often beyond. The switch typically needs attention before the motor does.

Liberty vs Zoeller

Two premium answers to the same question. The pit usually decides this one before the price does.

Iron is not a luxury finish. It is a heat sink, and it only earns its price in a pit that makes the motor work.
