Liberty vs Zoeller

Two premium answers to the same question. The pit usually decides this one before the price does.

A pump installed in a sump basin

Both of these are premium pumps that will outlast the cheap alternatives, and the comparison turns on the switch — which in this category is also the comparison that matters most, because switches are what fail.

Neither is simply better. A tethered float in a wide pit gives gentler operation; a vertical float in a narrow pit gives operation at all.

Liberty's differentiator is a switch with nothing exposed to foul. In a narrow pit, or where a stuck float has already caused a problem, that is worth real money.

  • No exposed float arm to catch
  • Fits tight basins
  • Cord disconnects for service
  • Most expensive mainstream option
  • Shorter cycles than a tethered float

In a wide basin the tethered float is genuinely the better mechanical arrangement: a long draw-down means fewer starts, and motor starts are what wear a pump out.

  • Long tethered cycles mean fewer motor starts
  • Lower price
  • Parts everywhere
  • Needs float swing room
  • No quick-disconnect cord

Deciding

  1. Measure the pit. Under about 14 inches across, buy Liberty. The decision is made.
  2. Look at what is on the floor. Finished basement with flooring and stored belongings: Liberty's switch is worth the premium.
  3. Count the cycles. A wide pit with heavy inflow favors Zoeller's longer tethered cycles and fewer starts.
  4. Check the budget. Zoeller costs less for comparable output, and it is not a compromise.

Questions people ask

Is Liberty better than Zoeller?

Liberty has the better switch and fits narrower pits; Zoeller is cheaper, better documented and easier to get parts for. Which is better depends on your pit, not on the brands.

Which has the better warranty?

Both offer multi-year warranties on their cast-iron residential pumps. Check the specific model, and keep proof of purchase from an authorized seller — warranty claims generally require it.

Does a vertical float wear out faster?

It cycles more often for the same volume of water, which means more motor starts. Against that, it has far fewer ways to jam. The two roughly cancel in practice.

Can I fit a Liberty switch to a Zoeller pump?

Not the integral switch, but a piggyback external switch from any manufacturer will work with most pumps. See float switches.

Liberty's argument is that the switch is what fails, so that is where the engineering should go. It is a good argument.

The brand most plumbers name first, for an unglamorous reason: cast iron, a float switch that has barely changed in decades, and published performance data.

Motors rarely die first. Switches do — and unlike a motor, a switch is a part you can replace in twenty minutes for the price of a takeout meal.
