Basement Watchdog
A brand built around the second pump rather than the first, and around the idea that one float switch is one too few.

Basement Watchdog is a different kind of brand from the three pump manufacturers on this site. It is built around backup systems, monitoring and redundancy rather than around primary pumps, and the design philosophy is consistent: assume the switch will fail, and fit a second one.
The dual float idea
Nearly everything in the range uses two float switches instead of one. The reasoning is sound and matches what actually goes wrong in sump pits: motors usually outlast switches, and a stuck float produces a pump that looks fine and does nothing. A second independent float makes that failure survivable.
What the brand is good at
- Redundancy as a default, not an upgrade.
- Complete kits. Controller, battery box, charger and adapters tend to arrive together.
- Monitoring, including battery condition and, on some controllers, connected alerts.
- Retrofit parts like the standalone dual float switch, which improve pumps from other brands.
Where it is not the answer
- Maximum backup flow. Wayne's ESP25N moves more water at ten feet.
- Primary pump pedigree. For the primary alone, the dedicated pump manufacturers have longer records.
- Small pits. Dual-float assemblies need room to work.

Basement Watchdog Big Combo
A 1/2 HP cast-iron primary and a 12 V backup, pre-matched, with dual floats on both pumps.

#ad we earn a commission · Amazon shows the current price
| Type | Pre-assembled primary + 12 V DC backup combination |
|---|---|
| Primary pump | 1/2 HP cast iron |
| Switch | Dual float switches on both the primary and the backup |
| Included | Primary pump, 12 V backup pump, primary controller, Wi-Fi capable backup controller, two dual float switches, 1.6 A charger, two check valves, 1-1/2 in rubber union, battery box |
| Battery | Not included, sold separately |
| Flow, by lift | 4,400 GPH at 0 ft · 2,600 GPH at 0 ft |
The strongest argument for this product is not any individual component, it is that the float heights arrive correct. Setting the backup float too low is the most common way a home-assembled backup fails to help, and a matched system removes that mistake.
What it gets right
- Four float switches across two pumps
- Two check valves and the union included, so the discharge is done right
- Wi-Fi capable backup controller
Where it falls short
- Battery separate
- Needs a large pit
- One manufacturer for both halves

Basement Watchdog Emergency (BWE)
Dual float switch and a battery fluid sensor, with the controller, box and charger in the carton.

#ad we earn a commission · Amazon shows the current price
| Type | 12 V DC battery backup pump, thermoplastic |
|---|---|
| Horsepower | 1/3 HP |
| Current draw | 6.5 A at 12 V |
| Switch | Dual float switch plus a battery fluid level sensor |
| Charger | 0.4 A |
| Included | Control unit, pump with 1-1/2" PVC adapter, battery box, charger |
| Battery | Not included, sold separately |
| Flow, by lift | 2,000 GPH at 0 ft · 1,000 GPH at 10 ft |
For a pit with ordinary inflow, the combination of completeness and redundancy at this price is hard to argue with. The flow figure is honest and modest; read it as hours of protection, not as a second primary.
What it gets right
- Dual floats mean one stuck switch does not disable the backup
- Modest 6.5 A draw stretches a given battery further
- Nearly everything needed arrives in one box
Where it falls short
- 1,000 GPH at 10 ft is modest
- Thermoplastic pump body
- Battery sold separately

Basement Watchdog BWC1 dual float switch
The dual float switch sold on its own, which is the cheapest reliability upgrade in this whole category.

#ad we earn a commission · Amazon shows the current price
| Type | Piggyback dual float switch with a controller |
|---|---|
| Redundancy | Two floats, so one stuck float does not stop the pump |
| Trigger | Activates when water raises the float about 1/3" |
| Run-on | Controller runs the pump about 10 extra seconds after the float drops |
If you buy one thing from this brand, consider making it this. It improves the reliability of a pump you already own, for very little money, with no work on the pump itself.
What it gets right
- Piggyback design works with almost any pump without touching it
- Two floats address the dominant silent-failure mode
- Costs a fraction of a pump
Where it falls short
- Needs pit width for the assembly
- Still mechanical, so still a wear item

Basement Watchdog AGM standby battery
The maintenance-free AGM designed around the brand's controllers and their monitoring.

| Type | Maintenance-free AGM standby battery |
|---|---|
| Designed for | Basement Watchdog backup controllers |
Where a controller monitors battery condition closely, a matched battery makes those readings meaningful. Outside this ecosystem, buy the largest sealed AGM your box will take.
What it gets right
- Sized and specified for the controller
- Maintenance-free
- Fits the supplied battery box
Where it falls short
- Less capacity per dollar than a generic AGM
- Only sensible inside this ecosystem

Questions people ask
Is Basement Watchdog a good brand?
For backup systems and redundancy, yes — the dual float design addresses the most common silent failure in a sump pit. For a primary pump on its own, the dedicated pump manufacturers have longer track records.
Does Basement Watchdog include the battery?
Generally no. Like almost every backup system, the battery is a separate purchase, and it should be a deep-cycle AGM rather than a starting battery.
What is the dual float switch for?
Redundancy. If one float sticks, the second still starts the pump. Since a stuck float is the most common silent failure, this addresses the real risk rather than a headline specification.
Can I use their switch on a different brand of pump?
Yes. The piggyback design plugs in between the pump and the outlet, so it works with essentially any pump that does not have an integral non-bypassable switch.
